چکیده

The manuscript describes the methodology employed to derive the current angular distribution models (ADMs) for the CERES instruments, i.e. the radiance-to-flux conversion algorithms for CERES thermal and solar measurements. This paper is necessary to document the new CERES product Ed4SSF, which improves the retrieval of cloud parameters and TOA flux with respect to previous versions. The enhancement of the cloud retrieval algorithms is briefly mentioned here, since the manuscript’s main ob-

Advances in Top-of-Atmosphere Radiative Flux Estimation from the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) Satellite Instrument

This study introduces new CERES Angular Distribution Models (ADMs) for estimating shortwave, longwave and window top-of-atmosphere radiative fluxes from broadband radiance measurements. By combining CERES measurements with narrowband, high-resolution imager measurements, up to a factor 4 improvement in TOA flux accuracy is achieved compared to TOA flux estimates from previous experiments, such ...

Evaluating CERES angular distribution models for snow using surface reflectance observations from the East Antarctic Plateau

[1] Clouds and the Earth’s radiant energy system (CERES) is a satellite-based remote sensing system designed to monitor the Earth’s radiation budget. In this paper we examine uncertainties in the angular distribution models (ADMs) used by CERES over permanently snow covered surfaces with clear skies. These ADMs are a key part of the CERES data processing algorithms, used to convert the observed...

New Ceres Data Examined for Evidence of Tropical Iris Feedback

New data products from the Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES; Wielicki et al., 1996) instrument were recently released. The Single Scanner Footprint (SSF) data product combines radiation budget data from CERES with cloud property retrievals from an imager on the same platform to provide a vastly improved characterization of the state of the atmosphere. In addition, the SSF inc...

A novel methodology for large-scale daily assessment of the direct radiative forcing of smoke aerosols

A new methodology was developed for obtaining daily retrievals of the direct radiative forcing of aerosols (24h-DARF) at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) using satellite remote sensing. Simultaneous CERES (Clouds and Earth’s Radiant Energy System) shortwave flux at the top of the atmosphere and MODIS (Moderate Resolution Spectroradiometer) aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrievals were used. To ana...

Assessment of smoke shortwave radiative forcing using empirical angular distribution models

a r t i c l e i n f o The Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) data has been used by several studies to calculate the top of atmosphere (TOA) shortwave aerosol radiative forcing (SWARF) of biomass burning aerosols over land. However, the current CERES angular distribution models that are used to convert measured TOA radiances to fluxes are not characterized by aerosols. Using ou...
